This subject guide is designed to help in the initial research on a topic in Byzantine Art and Architecture. Byzantine Art and Architecture comes from the Byzantine Empire, which existed for several centuries. There is no definitive start date to the beginning of the Byzantine Empire but it is usually attributed from the founding of Constantinople in 330 A.D. (during the time of Constantine (306-337)) to 1453 when Constantinople was taken by the Turks. Religion and politics play an important role in the various art and architecture styles.

This subject guide has been created for LIBR 530, a class at the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia, for the fall 2009. The purpose of this blog is to be Subject Guide to Byzantine History in Art resources that are available through the University of British Columbia Library. If your local library does not have some of the resources listed here there are many other excellent resources on Byzantine art and architecture than can be listed here. There are many other guides to Byzantine resources available on the web and from other libraries.
